Medical boards set themselves up as the organization that forces doctors to be up to date. They make it so that hospitals will not give privileges to non-board certified doctors. They offer costly continuing education to ensure doctors know what the are doing. To protect the public. The other side of that is that practicing doctors say that the education & exams they administer do not relate to what doctors see in their practices. So they are forced to spend time and money on maintaining licensure that does not improve their patient work. It may be worth finding out how much lobbying ABIM does. A quick search shows they advocating for something in the FL legislature. As a federal non-profit, they must not spend a significant amount of resources on lobbying. If you have the time to research this, that would be great.
